Greetings! As the founder and principal consultant of Chesapeake Medical Communications (CMC), I look forward to assisting you with your projects. CMC’s mission is to assist health organizations with researching, analyzing, and creating viable programs and educational initiatives intended to address health inequities and improve the quality of care for underserved populations. As a public health professional with formal training in health policy and management as well as international development studies, I understand that issues of

health service access, quality, and cost are fundamental concerns within the health care sector both domestically and on a global scale.

My training is balanced by a broad range of experiences that I draw upon to develop tailored products to meet clients’ unique needs. Examples of my professional experience include:

  • Contributions to a wide range of proposals resulting in more than $25 million in project awards: Designated as a Certified Grant Writer® (American Grant Writers Association); and collaborated with subject matter experts to write and/or manage the production process of grant applications and proposals to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (CDC, NIH, OMH), the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Agency for International Development, multilateral foreign assistance donors, state and local governments, and private foundations
  • More than 10 years of experience in grants management support: Conducted internal evaluations of program performance and outcome measures for an HHS-funded grant; and fulfilled roles in all phases of the post-award grant lifecycle for other donor-funded projects (including managing internal processes for project startup, contract approvals, and procurements and budget requisitions; managing project workplan implementation; monitoring completion of contract/subcontract deliverables; preparing timely submission of donor reports; and assisting with project closeout)
  • Development and dissemination of educational resources to more than 340,000 licensed health professionals and administrators at 135 health services organizations: Authored newsletter articles for health occupation boards in Maryland; collaborated with academic subject matter experts to author a cultural competency and health literacy primer for educators of health professionals; and developed an implementation toolkit to assist hospitals, community health centers, and patient-centered medical homes with integrating cultural and linguistic competency standards into ongoing quality improvement and cost reduction efforts
  • More than 10 years of experience in health policy analysis and writing: Worked in health advocacy and government settings to write reports and technical documents on health policy developments, analyze proposed changes to CMS policies and regulations pertaining to the Medicaid and Medicare programs, draft responses to calls for public comment on proposed HHS and Joint Commission standards, draft recommendations for implementation of legislation based on the collection and synthesis of public comments, develop surveys and rubrics for the collection and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data, and conduct literature reviews on health care finance and care coordination issues
  • Extensive experience providing publication and meeting support for major organizations: Supported facilitation of three project workgroups at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and worked with project teams to synthesize workgroup recommendations into a final report submitted to the Governor; managed daily operations and the production process for an African studies peer-reviewed journal for two years (UCLA); developed an evaluation research proposal (Veterans Administration Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System), technical data management report (CDC Division of Diabetes Translation), and summary evaluation documents (World Vision International) to help with internal project planning; copyedited and formatted for publication a World Bank country assistance technical report; and assisted International Finance Corporation staff in preparing briefing books for meetings with heads of state

These varied experiences in the analysis, synthesis, and writing of health and medical content have been quite helpful to me in working with clients addressing diverse needs and audiences. I am a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles with a Master of Public Health degree in Health Policy and Management and a Master of Arts in African Studies. I received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Economics from the University of Miami. In addition, I regularly participate in continuing education activities in relevant skill and knowledge areas that further enhance the quality of services delivered to clients of CMC.

Clients will also benefit from extensive networks in which I participate through my professional memberships in the American Medical Writers Association, Association of Proposal Management Professionals, Grant Professionals Association, Alliance for Continuing Education in the Health Professions, and the American Evaluation Association. CMC abides by the professional standards and code of ethics for work pertaining to the respective associations.

We are here to help with your writing needs!
